Navy
scheduled a tournament for Saturday and Sunday Feb. 18 &
19 in Charlotte, NC. On Saturday Navy A side beat UNC
Chapel Hill A side 34-12 and Navy B side beat UNC Chapel
Hill B side 25-6 making the Carolina Blue cry Uncle and
return to Chapel Hill. Sunday's matches pitted Navy
against "The" Ohio State University. The teams entered
Sunday play ranked 6th and 7th respectively and the
crowd was not disappointed. Navy's A side lost 15-14 in
a very tight match that could have easily gone either
way and the B side match was equally close with Navy
winning by a score of 10-8. As you can see from the
photos, the weather Saturday was drizzling rain and it
made for a muddy field. Sunday was cooler, but the sun
did come out for an enjoyable day.
Rob
Miller (07), one of our local mids, has been a member of
the Navy team since Plebe year and because of his local
connection he asked his mother, Johanna, to arrange for
lunch both days for 45 plus men and coaches. With the
help and donations of other devoted parents from our
ranks the team was fed chicken and pasta on Saturday and
hamburgers and baked beans on Sunday. Those present to
help included Lynn Bergman, Gail & Andy White, Susan &
Dan Brenner, Jim Pridgen, Johanna & Larry Miller
and Priscilla Brown (a family friend of the Millers & an
Ohio State fan). Glenda & David Martin joined the team
for dinner Saturday night in a show of support.
A fun
and exciting weekend was had by all. Most of us just
enjoyed being in the presence of the midshipmen and
having a chance to serve them as they continue to
prepare to serve us all.
